Our history

Komotini 19th century.

The native Greeks of the city have full control of its economic activity, operating in various sectors. Among them was the Nestoros family, an old bourgeois family of Komotini, Alkibiades Nestoros cooperated with Spyridon Mousouris, son of a well-known Cephalonian family of ship owning merchants, now settled in Komotini.

The well-travelled Captain Spyros maintains trade relations with Constantinople, Imbros and Tenedos from where he brings the best herbs, spices and seeds which he markets in his grocery store and also uses for the secret family recipe of ouzo that he produces with his partner Alkibiades since 1893 and characterizes the Thracian Ouzo until today.

The two families are related when Alcibiades' son Hercules marries Spyros' daughter Ekaterina. With the departure of Alcibiades from the business in 1915, the sons Nestoros, Hercules and Socrates, took over their father's position in the family business "Sp. Mousouris - Sons Nestoros".

After the war the sons of Hercules Nestoros (the name changed to Chatzinestoros in the early 30’s) Alkibiadis, Eftstathios and Petros continued the family distillery until 1977, when 9 small local family distillery businesses joined together with the vision of creating a company with growth potential beyond the narrow boundaries of the Region, founding Distillery-Winery of Thrace S.A.
